  Hellas and the Bosporus

The “Demetra” beneficial Foundation has published a book of a famous Russian researcher, Doctor of Historical Sciences E.A. Savostina, “Hellas and the Bosporus . Greek Sculpture on the North Pontus” in the series “BI.Supplementum”. This is the first monograph in the modern classical scholarship on how the development of Hellenic impulse in the culture of far northern colonies, founded during the great Greek Colonization and being in new surroundings, took place. “Hellas” and the “ Bosporus ” – two parts of the world of Hellenoi – are regarded by the author as the center and a periphery, and as an “impulse” and a “response” in content and semantic plans.
Sculpture – a unique material that is comparable to the metropolis and a colony – was chose as the main source of this study. The specificity of culture and art of the Greek State in the North Pontic area – Cimmerian Bosporus, is reconstructed on the basis of it.
